Children’s Emergency Center
North Central Baptist Hospital offers the only separate children’s emergency center in north central San Antonio. Board Certified pediatricians with vast experience in emergency medicine staff the spacious and brightly designed 18-bed emergency department, alongside highly trained pediatric nurses. Medical Director Thomas J. Gowan, M.D. maintains a focus on clinical quality, operational efficiencies and detailed communication with referring physicians. Our patient satisfaction scores are consistently above the 90th percentile.

Surgery and Anesthesia
Baptist Regional Children’s Center pediatric surgeon Charles Baldwin, M.D. has more than 30 years of experience in the surgical treatment of pediatric illnesses and injuries. Our pediatric anesthesiologists are specialty trained and experienced in managing discomfort and pain. We have a certified Child Life specialist on staff and a Child Life play area on the inpatient pediatric unit for patients and siblings. Pre-surgery tours are also available to help children and parents know what to expect before surgery, to answer questions related to the procedure and the hospital stay, and to eliminate any anxiety that they may have.

Sedation Services
Inpatient as well as outpatient pediatric sedation services provided in the Pediatric Sedation and Diagnostic Center at North Central Baptist Hospital are administered by a dedicated sedation team of highly-trained physicians and nurses. Imaging studies and minor procedures can be performed on children under mild sedation with one-on-one attention, while in a safe and comfortable environment. The sedation center at North Central Baptist Hospital is the only unit in San Antonio offering nitrous oxide sedation, administered by fellowship trained pediatric intensivists. This type of sedation helps manage discomfort, pain and emotional stress for our pediatric patients when they are undergoing minor procedures or diagnostic imaging such as MRI or CT scans. Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Baptist Regional Children’s Center at North Central Baptist Hospital is the only unit of its kind in north San Antonio. Board certified pediatric intensivists, certified pediatric intensive care nurses and specially trained pediatric staff, all certified in Pediatric Life Support (PALS), deliver individualized, personal, hands-on care. Advanced and non-invasive ventilation techniques are practiced in the PICU. We maintain detailed communications with referring physicians and sub-specialists.

Nephrology
Board Certified pediatric nephrologist Janet Rowe, M.D. is one of the many specialists working closely with North Central Baptist Hospital to care for your patient. Dr. Rowe’s office is located in the Atrium medical office building on the campus of North Central Baptist Hospital and she is available to consult on cases involving urinary tract infections, hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes and more.

Radiology  
Our focus at the Baptist Regional Children’s Center is on preventing repeat imaging through careful documentation and record keeping. Studies are ordered only when there is a clear medical indication. We use the lowest amount of radiation based on the size of the child, only image the indicated area, avoid multiple scans on our pediatric patients and use alternative diagnostic studies like ultrasound and MRI when possible. Orthopedic Surgery
When a child arrives at the pediatric emergency room with a broken bone that might require surgery, you can be sure he or she will be taken care of by an expert. Orthopedic surgeons are on call and available to respond to the needs of patients seen in the Children’s Emergency Center. Patients are treated on-site and will not be transferred to another hospital unless necessary. By the summer of 2011, North Central Baptist Hospital will have our own team of fellowship trained pediatric orthopedic surgeons, dedicated to the care of children in our community.

Hospitalist Services
Board Certified pediatric hospitalists are available 24/7 for inpatient pediatric are at the Baptist Regional Children’s Center at North Central Baptist Hospital. The pediatric hospitalists are dedicated to providing patient-focused education for families and facilitating clinical collaboration for seamless transition from the PICU to the 28-bed general pediatric unit. When needed, specialist consultation is also available.

Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) Services
Rose Stavinoha, M.D., Don Moe, M.D. and Juan Bonilla, M.D. provide pediatric ENT surgery at the Baptist Regional Children’s Center.

Child Life Center

The Child Life Center at North Central Baptist Hospital provides a nurturing and comforting environment for our pediatric patients. A Certified Child Life Specialist works with families to make sure their stay is as comfortable as possible. The child life center features a playroom equipped with videos, games and activities to keep children busy and happy during their stay. Pre-operative tours are available for patients and families prior to admission to the hospital.


Pedi Q Outpatient Testing and Treatment
Pedi Q is a place children can go for outpatient diagnostic tests and treatment. Short wait times and a kid-friendly atmosphere helps make the visit quick and easy. Pedi Q is staffed by skilled pediatric nurses, technicians, aides and phlebotomists. Call 297-4440 to schedule tests.
